Susan R. Healy, a founding partner of Vernon Healy, represents individuals and businesses in cases involving financial disputes. Ms. Healy has over twenty-five years experience practicing in civil, criminal and appellate courts and before arbitration panels. She brings that background and depth of experience to Vernon Healy, where she concentrates her practice in the areas of business litigation, securities/investment litigation and arbitration, and appellate law.
Some of Ms. Healy’s recent high-profile and noteworthy cases include:
■ Cases brought on behalf of investors in a real estate program created by the now defunct D’Alessandro & Woodyard real estate company and others involving the First Homes developments in Cape Coral and Lehigh Acres. Defendants in the cases offered “hassle-free” investments in a real estate rental program. Instead, they allegedly procured inflated appraisals, arranged financing for more than the fair value of the homes and left investors to try to find tenants or buyers for the overpriced properties. Ms. Healy is fighting for her clients to recover the losses caused by the defendants’ alleged securities law violations, breaches of contract and fiduciary duty, fraud, negligence and civil conspiracy. At least one of the defendants, Samir Cabrera, has been indicted on federal fraud charges relating to another real estate development.
■ Negligence and civil theft cases involving investors victimized by a Jackson Hewitt franchise in Sarasota. The franchise was operated by Daniel Prewett, a twice-convicted felon who had served time for both tax fraud and larceny. Prewett operated four Jackson Hewett franchises in Sarasota until he was arrested again on money laundering and narcotics charges. Ms. Healy has filed lawsuits against Jackson Hewett seeking to recover the damages suffered by clients as a result of Jackson Hewett's negligence in permitting a convicted felon to use the Jackson Hewett name and franchise as a license to steal.
Ms. Healy is active in numerous legal organizations: She currently serves as treasurer for the Florida Association for Women Lawyers and as secretary for the Collier County Women's Bar Association. Other professional groups with which she’s involved include the Appellate Practice Section of The Florida Bar, the Federal Bar Association; Collier County Bar Association, Lee County Bar Association and the Public Investors Arbitration Bar Association.
Bar Admissions include: State of Florida Bar (1984), U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida (1986) U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida (2002), Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals (1986) United States Supreme Court (1987).
